Muitos Visitantes, Poucas Ações

Since the beginning of this year, our Centro de Estudos and the Museu Histórico da Imigração Japonesa have been receiving an increasing number of visitors.

Yes, this is Centenário da Imigração Japonesa. This is exactly what we have long imagined to be how it should be.

The recent coverages of the Japanese Immigration in the Brazilian media are obviously pushing a lot of Brazilians, Nikkei or non-Nikkei, to our office rooms, as if to say that "it is time to recall the history of the Japanese immigration!"

In fact, we have been visited by a wide range of people: college and graduate students from all over São Paulo State, university professors, college study tours from Japan and Brazil, magazine editors, journalists, foreign correspondents, producers from TV channels, "amateur" historians, museum workers, NGO activists, etc. Even leaders from the Committee of Céntenario come to us to see if their writings are historically "correct."

This is a critical moment when the historical materials long hidden in our old office rooms are being translated into a large-scale social memory.

However, we also need to ask ourselves: "are we well prepared to serve these people in the right way?"

I observe that many of our colleagues are so busy with their daily administrative work that they are unable to attend these people as they should/hope to. Moreover, I see, especially in our Centro de Estudos, a lack of theory and hospitality in receiving the visitors from outside the colônia.

We should all be aware that our institutional mission will be much better achieved through strengthening the network of friends and supporters.

アメリカ人類学会American Anthropology Associations(AAA)の博物館人類学部会が出している
Museum Anthropologyという雑誌のブログサイトによると、

米国国会図書館がその写真コレクションをFlickrで公開するプロジェクトを開始したそうです。
パイロット・プログラムとして約3000点の写真の掲載を行って大きな反響があった模様。
ソーシャル・ウェブ・サービスを使ってコモンズを作り出す作業として紹介されています。

確かに人文研もプログラムを使えば
いちいち独自のデータベース・システムを作る必要がないので
ほとんどお金をかけずに史料等を公開することは出来ますね･･･。
検索機能も優れていますし･･･。

将来的には、世界の学術情報の一元的な
コモンズ化も可能かも知れませんね。

Flickr+Library of Congress=Commons

Flickr launched a new project called The Commons giving the Flickr community the opportunity to contribute to describing the world’s public photo collections. The project is launching a pilot program with the Library of Congress which has had a Prints & Photographs Online Catalog for some time, comprised of about one million images. As part of this pilot, the Library of Congress has published approximately 3,000 photos from two of its popular existing collections to Flickr:

1) The Bain Collection of news photos and 2) American Memory: Color Photographs from the Great Depression.

Now, Flickr members can explore historic photos on Flickr and help add a rich layer of insight to photos – by adding tags and comments. The key goal of this project is to show that the meaning of content can become richer when you add more voices to the way it’s described. The project has been a huge success already. Within the first 24 hours of the launch, 4,000 unique tags were created and 500 comments were left in a flurry of enthusiasm from the community.

This relationship demonstrates how cultural entities from two separate ‘worlds’ can collaborate through social web services, and increase accessibility to cultural heritage collections from around the world. Flickr hopes to expand the project with other cultural institutions in the future, allowing members to explore more abundant collections of cultural and historic photos and truly following its vision to be the ‘eyes of the world’.

日本とブラジルとニューヨークの皆さん、こんにちは。

サンパウロはまだまだ夜になっても暑い日が続いています。
夜12時も近いですが、気温は21度です。

さて、人文研のウェブサイトをリニューアルしてから、
もう4週間ほどが経とうとしています。

これまで1300近いアクセスがあったようですが、
皆さんのご感想はいかがでしょうか？

先日のリニューアルは、旧ウェブサイトの形式を踏襲しつつ、
内容を編成し直したもので、
インターフェース面ではいくつかお褒めの言葉も頂戴しましたが、
今後はまだまだ内容を改善していく余地がありそうです。

現在は、ウェブサイトの一部英語化とポルトガル語化、および
ブラジル日本移民に関する基本的情報を掲載することを目標にしています。

私自身の能力と低予算ソフトウェアのキャパシティ、
そして研究所のポリティクスの問題等で、
対応できないことも多いとは思うのですが、
もし皆さんのほうで感想等ありましたら、
お伝えください。

日本全国、ブラジル南部各州、そしてニューヨークに集中しているようです。
